“Awe”-some Wonder

“He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand

rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed.”

-Albert Einstein

The human mind is uniquely capable of conceptualizing elaborate models of the universe, yet as Einstein famously recognized, “the most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible”. At the edges of scientific understanding, our discoveries about ourselves and the natural world spark our experience of awe. Awe is the overwhelming feeling of reverence and admiration produced by that which is grand, sublime, or powerful. This marvelous emotion of wonder is closely linked to curiosity and gratitude, all of which inspire us, improve our well-being, and help us age well.

To understand this phenomenon, think of something that stirs your soul with amazement, such as being moved by love, music, or art. Whether through spiritual contemplation or adventuring in Nature, “awe”-some experiences have profound, tangible influence on body-mind-spirit health: decreasing stress, reducing pain, boosting brain power, and improving overall sense of well-being.

Marveling at something awe-inspiring quiets the mind, reduces worry, and invigorates the spirit. Catch the next meteor shower, search for the rainbow in the clouds, or soak in the mist of a majestic waterfall to boost your health and wellness with “awe”-some wonder!
